While your resort is all-inclusive and tipping is included in your resort package, I recommend tipping at your discretion. In my experience, generosity and kindness will be rewarded with excellent service.

US Dollars are fine for all-inclusive resorts. You’ll need singles and fives. You will quickly realize that while everyone is paying in US dollars, change will not be available from those you are tipping. It is always better to have more cash than you need. It is expensive to get cash once you are there. There is a safe in your room and you can keep it there. The front desk can always make change for you. I suggest at least $300 for 5-day trips for 2 people.

You should absolutely tip the bellman and anyone who touches your bags. The customary tip is $2 for the first bag and $1 for each additional bag. Drivers often do not work for the resort and should also be tipped. $3 to $5 per person is ideal but we often tip more if they point things out along the way. Be sure to tip the guides on excursions, generally $2 to $5 per person. The drivers on the excursions should also be tipped – $2 to $3 per person. If you have any spa services, you should leave a tip of 15-20% of the cost of the service.

Again, tipping at the resort is optional, but common. (The exception to this is Sandals Resort and Couples Resort, they do not accept tips) Tipping your bartenders well during your stay will ensure you are consistently treated to exceptional service. However, you don’t have to tip with every round of drinks if you are returning to the same bartender or sitting at the bar.

Suggested Tipping Amounts:

  • Simple Beverage – $1
  • Cocktails – $2
  • Waitstaff at buffet meals – $2 per guest
  • Waitstaff at served breakfast/lunch – $3 per guest
  • Waitstaff at served dinner – $5 per guest
  • Daily Housekeeping – $2 to $5 per night – leave on a pillow
  • Room Service – $3 per guest ordering
  • Butler Service – $20 per day that you see that butler is typical, but you can adjust that based on how often you see that butler and the level of service provided.

Restaurants outside of hotels often add a service charge to your check. Most people usually add 5% to 10% more, especially if the service has been good.

There are a few shops at the resorts, and you can use your credit card there. A lot of resorts will have preferred vendors set up in the lobby or by the pool where you can purchase items. Most will only accept cash (but you can negotiate). If you leave the resort and go shopping, most vendors only accept cash.

If you leave the resort, you will need cash for the cab. If you want to venture away from the resort, I suggest checking with the concierge or front desk for transportation recommendations. They generally have cabs they use and trust they will call for you. The cab driver will then give you their card and most shops and restaurants will call them to pick you up. Personally, I hesitate to get into a random cab and feel a little safer using the one from the resort. Grab the business card for the hotel before you leave in case you forget which resort you are staying at (there are often many resorts of the same brand in every city) it’s also helpful if there is a language barrier.

I’m sure most of you have seen the luggage nightmare that has been plaguing travelers this summer, especially in Europe. No one wants to lose their bags. The immediate reaction is to carry on instead of checking your bags. That’s all well and good, but that doesn’t guarantee you won’t have to gate-check your bag. Every other traveler has the same idea, and overhead space could be full before you board the plane!

I’m not a carry-on kind of gal. I can sometimes cram it all in going but coming home I have way too many souvenirs. And let’s be real, I need options and have way too many toiletries. Anything more than a few days and my bag is getting checked!

So, what can you do?

Bluetooth tracking devices are an easy and affordable option to keep track of your bags. I like Apple Air Tags because you can use the “Find My” app to see where your bags are even if you are not close to them. Tile is another option. I prefer the Air Tags because they are easy to set up and have a more extensive network than Tile, making them easier to locate.

Blue Ribbon Bags is a service that tracks and expedites the return of your delayed baggage for 96 hours from the time your flight lands. If four days go by and your bags still aren’t delivered, Blue Ribbon Bags pays $1,000 per bag – no questions asked, no receipts necessary. All you need to do is file a claim with the airline and Blue Ribbon Bags will handle the rest!

You could opt not to bring your bags and ship them instead! Luggage Free offers door-to-door delivery of your luggage and golf and ski gear too. When you sign up, they email you instructions and labels to attach to your luggage, then they collect your bags from home and ship them to your final destination. Your shipment is fully insured, tracked in real-time, and comes with an on-time guarantee.

It is important to remember that lost or delayed baggage is generally covered with travel insurance which is another reason why I always recommend purchasing it.

Happy Packing!

There’s nothing more special than seeing our children (or grandchildren) light up when they see those loveable Disney characters. Character dining at Disney World has always been a favorite among guests because they get the chance to get up close to their favorite characters for a laugh or a hug.

Disney has just shared some great news – more character dining experiences are returning! Here are the characters and dining locations where you’ll find your favorite fare and special characters:

September 20 – Winnie the Pooh and friends at The Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom Park (lunch and dinner). Feast on options like Carved Prime Rib, Seasonal Ravioli, and Peel & Eat Shrimp in this greenhouse-inspired beauty.

September 27 – Lilo and Stitch at ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort (breakfast). Enjoy tasty treats like the Pineapple Coconut Breakfast Bread and Mickey Waffles, and sip on the iconic Lilikoi Juice and the yummy Moana Smoothie.

October 4 – Minnie and her friends at Cape May Café at Disney’s Beach Club Resort (breakfast). Enjoy your morning favorites at this feast, including the mouthwatering Salted Caramel “Beach Buns.” And what breakfast is complete without the famous Mickey and Minnie Waffles?

These character dining locations join other newly returned experiences, like the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and Chip ‘N Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. What a wonderful way to enjoy one of your meals while visiting Walt Disney World!

Attendees are invited to wear their favorite costumes and enjoy exclusive entertainment, Disney villains, frightfully delicious menu items and more. New additions to this year’s party include event-exclusive step-in photo opportunities and a Halloween-themed 50th Anniversary celebration commemorative print on the reusable trick-or-treat bags.

Tickets go on sale May 18th and sell out quickly for this limited-capacity event. The fun begins in mid-August on 4 select nights. There are 13 dates in September and 18 nights in October, with the final party on Halloween night.

Royal Caribbean has made two major announcements regarding new ships!

Everyone is familiar with ribbon-cutting ceremonies but have you ever seen a steel-cutting ceremony? In Saint-Nazaire, France, Royal Caribbean recently marked the official start of construction by cutting the first piece of steel for what will be Royal Caribbean’s sixth Oasis Class cruise ship. The ceremony took place at the shipyard where it will be built. And the name of this new ship? (Drum roll please) . . . Utopia of the Seas! Delivery of the new ship, which will have approximately 2,800 cabins,  is scheduled for the end of May 2024. Royal Caribbean has not yet announced where the ship will sail from or what itineraries she will visit.

The other big news is that the new Icon of the Seas will be homeported in Miami after she arrives in the United States. This brand new ship is the first in the new Icon Class, which Royal Caribbean has been very quiet about. The Icon of the Seas will make its debut in the UK market this summer and then head across the Atlantic to Miami. The International President and CEO stated that the ship will likely have some stops in New York or Boston during the East Coast transit. The cruise line has spent five years designing the ship, and while they haven’t disclosed many details, they are promising that this will be a game-changer for the cruising industry.

Icon of the Seas will feature a combination of “tradition, evolution and revolution,” all elements from their iconic ships. Tradition refers to fan favorites of the brand that will always be found across the fleet. Evolution refers to improving elements that cruisers love, such as entertainment venues and waterslides. And finally, revolution elements are industry firsts and promise to “wow” their customers. I can’t wait until the details are made public! The Icon Class is the first class of new vessels since Royal Caribbean launched the first of its Quantum Class ships in 2014. Stay tuned . . .

Ah, Spring. The temperatures are getting warmer, the flowers are budding and the days are getting longer. It’s time to start thinking about Halloween. Wait, what??? That’s right. Select tickets and packages are on sale now for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort.

For a record-breaking 43 nights from September 2 through October 31, Universal Orlando Resort presents Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida. This is the perfect fall getaway and people are planning now!

Hailed by fans as “nonstop scary awesomeness,” “absolutely terrifying” and “downright chilling,” Halloween Horror Nights is the pinnacle of immersive Halloween entertainment and has transformed fall travel into a “must do” for people around the globe. Season after season, the terror has no bounds as Universal Orlando pulls out all of the sinister stops to celebrate Halloween with a fearsome slate of festivities that not only come to life at the award-winning event – but also across the entire destination, from dining to hotel experiences and more.

Halloween Horror Nights 2022 will boast 10 new, movie-quality haunted houses inspired by everything from cinematic greats to unfathomable original abominations, five scare zones filled with hordes of gruesome creatures lunging from the shadows, and two outrageous live shows that will showcase compelling performances. And when you need a break from the scares, satiate your appetite with food and beverage inspired by the event’s haunts, shop the latest merchandise at highly themed retail locations, and enjoy the rides.

Single-night event tickets for Halloween Horror Nights are available now. There are various vacation packages available that include accommodations and one-night admission to the event. Or you might want to look at the “Get 2 Days Free with a 3-Day Ticket” offer that gives you five days of admission to all three Universal Orlando theme parks. Hotel guests get access to a dedicated Halloween Horror Nights gate for faster entry into the event. That is, if you want to be one of the first to enter a haunted house. Hmm.

If that’s not enough to feed your Halloween spirit, there are upgrades available for purchase. You can get a shared or private V.I.P. (actually, make that R.I.P.) guided walking tour with special entry into the haunted houses and other participating attractions. Prefer to see the inner workings of a haunted house? You can take a daytime lights-on V.I.P. tour of 3 or 6 haunted houses.

Obviously, Halloween Horror Nights is not for the faint of heart. It is recommended for children ages 13 and up and for adults who are looking to share the scares. If you’re already thinking about Fall Break, this is the time to plan your getaway to Universal Studios Florida.
