Paros is quickly becoming the connoisseur’s choice, with its stylish capital, swanky resorts, and remote villages, offering the perfect undiscovered getaway. With spectacular beaches, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking landscapes, it won’t be long before “this island you never heard of tops everyone’s bucket list.” The island features Byzantine footpaths connecting traditional villages, white cubic houses, and the famous Orthodox church of “100 gates”—all complemented by some of Greece’s finest dining.

Neighboring Naxos, another “favorite undiscovered island,” charms with traditional villages where locals still live off the land and weave clothing on old-fashioned looms. Visitors can explore ancient monasteries, Venetian castles, centuries-old olive groves, and white-washed houses on marble-paved alleyways. The island’s fresh-caught seafood, goat cheese, and home-grown produce make it a culinary destination in its own right.

In Portugal (one of my favorite countries in Europe), travelers are venturing beyond Lisbon and Porto to discover hidden treasures. Braga, often called the “Rome of Portugal,” captivates with its religious architecture and vibrant cultural scene. Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers well-preserved medieval architecture and fascinating Roman ruins. Wine enthusiasts are flocking to the Douro Valley, with its stunning terraced vineyards along the river, charming towns like Pinhão, and exceptional wine tasting experiences.

For those seeking an elegant alternative to Paris, France’s Loire Valley provides the perfect escape just 1-2 hours from the capital. This “Garden of France” boasts a fairy-tale collection of Renaissance châteaux set along France’s longest river. Visitors can explore magnificent structures like the Château de Chambord, with its distinctive French Renaissance architecture, the elegant Château de Chenonceau, which spans the River Cher, and the stately Château d’Amboise, located near Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb. Beyond architectural splendors, the region is renowned for its exceptional wines, particularly crisp whites and sparkling crémants. Charming medieval towns and peaceful riverside cycling paths offer authentic French experiences.

Trend 2: Multi-Destination Itineraries with Depth

The era of whirlwind tours trying to “see it all” is giving way to more thoughtful travel. Luxury travelers are now choosing to spend more time in fewer places, diving deeper into each destination’s culture and rhythms.

Rather than racing through Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan in a single trip, discerning travelers might spend a week divided between Florence and the Tuscan countryside. This allows time to not only appreciate Florence’s magnificent Duomo cathedral and artistic treasures like Michelangelo’s David and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus but also to venture into authentic neighborhoods like Oltrarno with its artisan workshops. From this base, travelers can take day trips to iconic sites like the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the stunning coastal villages of Cinque Terre, returning each evening to savor a true Florentine aperitivo in a historic piazza, accompanied by local Chianti wine.

Similarly, Greece enthusiasts are replacing the traditional Athens-Mykonos-Santorini-Crete marathon with more focused experiences. A thoughtful itinerary might combine Athens’ ancient wonders with just one or two carefully selected islands. Pairing Athens with Rhodes, for example, allows travelers to experience both the Acropolis and Europe’s largest medieval town within a single trip, with enough time to absorb each destination truly.

Crete

Getting Ready for REAL ID: What Air Travelers Need to Know

The clock is ticking on an important deadline that will affect how Americans travel domestically. If you’ve been putting off getting your REAL ID, now is the time to take action. With the May 7, 2025 enforcement date approaching rapidly, understanding what this means for your travel plans is essential.

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID refers to federal standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards that were established by the REAL ID Act passed by Congress in 2005. This legislation was enacted in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to strengthen security measures for identification documents nationwide.

The Timeline You Need to Know

The implementation of REAL ID has been postponed several times, but the final deadline is now set:

  • Until May 6, 2025: Your current state-issued driver’s license or ID card will continue to be accepted for domestic air travel, regardless of whether it’s REAL ID compliant.
  • Beginning May 7, 2025: Standard driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted for domestic flights. You’ll need either a REAL ID-compliant license (typically marked with a star in the upper corner) or an alternative acceptable form of identification, such as a passport.

How to Tell If You Already Have a REAL ID

REAL ID-compliant licenses and identification cards are typically marked with a star, gold star, or black star in the upper right corner. The specific design varies by state, but the presence of this star is your indicator that your ID meets federal requirements.

What to Do If You Don’t Have a REAL ID Yet

If your current license doesn’t have the star indicator, you’ll need to visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to upgrade. Be prepared to bring several documents with you, typically including:

  1. Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport)
  2. Proof of Social Security Number
  3. Two proofs of residence (utility bills, bank statements)
  4. Proof of any name changes (if applicable)

Many DMVs allow you to pre-apply online and schedule an appointment to reduce wait times.

Alternatives to REAL ID

Don’t panic if you can’t get your REAL ID by the deadline. Several other forms of identification will still be accepted for domestic air travel, including:

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • DHS Trusted Traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. military ID
  • Permanent resident card
  • Foreign passport

Why This Matters for Travelers

The transition to REAL ID represents one of the most significant changes to domestic air travel identification requirements in recent history. While the enforcement date has been delayed multiple times (most recently due to the pandemic), all indications suggest that the May 7, 2025 deadline will be final.

For frequent travelers, obtaining a REAL ID or ensuring you have an acceptable alternative should be a priority. The last thing anyone wants is to arrive at the airport for an important trip only to be denied boarding because of an invalid ID.

Italy’s Culinary Delights: Your Guide to the Ultimate Food Tours

Travel almost anywhere in the world and you’ll notice Italian influences. From magnificent art to breathtaking architecture, Italy has left an indelible mark on global culture. But nothing quite captures Italy’s essence like its extraordinary cuisine.

While pizza and pasta have conquered the global palate, nothing compares to experiencing authentic Italian food in its birthplace. That’s why I always recommend an Italian food tour to my clients looking for a truly memorable vacation experience.

Bologna: A Paradise for Artisanal Food Lovers

When my clients ask about northern Italy, I immediately point them toward Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna. This region is a treasure trove of artisanal specialties that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand.

The markets in Bologna are an absolute must-visit, where you can sample some of the world’s finest balsamic vinegar, Parmesan cheese, and authentic mortadella. I always encourage my clients to try tagliatelle al Ragù – what many know as “Bolognese sauce,” but trust me, it’s nothing like what you’ve had at home!

Naples: Pizza’s Sacred Birthplace

Naples offers my clients the perfect blend of cultural history, breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius, and of course, incredible food. Walking those cobblestone streets, discovering ancient castles and churches while snacking on authentic Neapolitan street food like polpette or cuoppo, is an experience I love to customize for travelers.

As the birthplace of pizza, Naples delivers an authentic experience that simply can’t be replicated. That soft, chewy crust baked in a stone oven and topped with San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella – the Margherita pizza here will forever change how you think about this beloved dish.

I always make sure my clients try other local specialties like minestrone Napolitano (a flavor-packed vegetable soup) and sfogliatella (those delicate shell-shaped pastries filled with custard cream) – both absolute must-tastes on any Naples food tour.

Florence: Tuscany’s Cultural and Culinary Heart

The Tuscan region holds a special place in my heart, offering some of Italy’s finest food and wine experiences. Florence, as its crown jewel, serves as the perfect starting point for culinary exploration.

When we think of verdant landscapes as far as the eye can see, our brain often conjures images of Ireland, and rightly so. But there are many other gorgeous green destinations around the world waiting for you, too! From the misty emerald rainforests of the Amazon to the rolling jade hills of New Zealand, our planet boasts an astonishing array of lush paradises that would make even St. Patrick himself green with envy. In celebration of the patron saint’s day, let’s embark on a global journey to discover Earth’s most spectacular verdant wonderlands – places where nature’s green palette paints breathtaking masterpieces across diverse terrains and ecosystems.

Congo Basin, Central Africa – The second largest rainforest in the world, the Congo Basin rainforest, spans six countries and is known as the “Lungs of Africa.” While it is one of the most important ecological regions in the world, it remains under constant threat from poaching, deforestation, and exploitation of its natural resources like gold and oil. The tall hardwoods provide a habitat for more than 1,000 species of birds along with African forest elephants, leopards, and mountain gorillas. The fertile land and winding Congo River create a home for several indigenous groups.

Hoh Rainforest, United States – Located on the west side of Olympic National Park, Hoh Rainforest is a temperate rainforest with thick undergrowth and canopy where the massive trees make even the tallest visitors feel small. Visitors can spot a variety of wildlife like Roosevelt elk, black bears, and river otters. Slugs, snails, and snakes thrive in the layers of ferns and moss that cover the forest floor.

Sa Pa, Vietnam – The rice terraces carved from the steep mountainsides of Sa Pa have been tended to by locals for centuries. The subtropical climate provides ideal growing conditions for a variety of flora, including medicinal plants like cinnamon, ginseng, and angelica. Much of Sa Pa Valley is protected, as it’s located within Hoang Lien National Park.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, Costa Rica – The Costa Rica cloud forests, where the low-lying clouds provide constant moisture to the flora that grows there, feature stunning hues of green anywhere you look. Over 100 mammals, 400 birds, and 120 reptile and amphibian species make this area their habitat. Tourists can take it all in through hiking, buggy rides, traversing the suspension bridges, or even ziplining.

Val D’Orcia, Italy – The stretching countryside of southern Italy near Umbria is one of the most photogenic locations of Tuscany. The gentle green rolling hills dotted with the region’s iconic cypress trees stun in spring and summer, then ease into equally beautiful warm golden orange and red hues of autumn.

Everglades National Park, United States – The 1.5 million acres of Florida’s Everglades feel like another world. The forests, prairies, and wetlands of the national park are home to a variety of wildlife like alligators, manatees, and the elusive Florida panther. A scenic drive along the park’s roads or a boat ride through the wetlands offer visitors a truly immersive experience with Florida’s flora and fauna.

Kauai, United States – When people imagine Hawaii, it’s often the island of Kauai they are picturing. The Garden Isle boasts tropical rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and beautiful beaches, but 90% of the island isn’t accessible by car. Explore Hawaii’s oldest island by foot, boat, or helicopter and once home you’ll be dreaming about a return visit.

And because no list of green destinations would be complete without Ireland!

Killarney National Park, Ireland – Located in County Kerry, Killarney National Park flaunts its beauty and history across nearly 39 square miles of woodlands, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. Within the park’s boundaries lie many sites to be explored. Muckross House and Gardens, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland, offers guided tours of its grounds to learn about the furnishings and artifacts on display there. The crafts workshop features demonstrations of traditional spinning and weaving methods. Ross Castle, constructed in the 15th century and restored in 1970, overlooks Lough Leane and is available for independent or guided tours. For visitors who prefer riding to hiking the walking paths, the Jaunting Car excursions are a perfect way to see the parks while learning about local history from the jarveys.
