The clock is ticking on an important deadline that will affect how Americans travel domestically. Beginning May 7, 2025, standard driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted for domestic flights – you’ll need either a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star in the upper corner) or an alternative form of identification, such as a passport.
REAL ID-compliant licenses are typically marked with a star in the upper right corner. If your current license doesn’t have this indicator, you’ll need to visit your state’s DMV with several documents including proof of identity, Social Security Number, and residence.
Don’t panic if you can’t get your REAL ID by the deadline – several alternatives will still be accepted, including passports, DHS Trusted Traveler cards, and military IDs.
